However, B2B emails have an average &lsquo;open rate&rsquo; of less that 20% - and the &lsquo;click rate&rsquo; is&nbsp;closer to 10%. This is despite 50% of businesses making sure that their emails are targeted&nbsp;by geographic and demographic criteria, just as we do. It&rsquo;s clear that more must be done to&nbsp;further refine the message and the people to whom it&rsquo;s sent.

Alterian published a report on this subject recently which&nbsp;suggests that a far better means&nbsp;of targeting your email marketing is to create groups based on their previous click through&nbsp;behaviour.

It&rsquo;s common sense, really; if I&rsquo;ve sent an email out to 4,000 contacts, of whom 200 have&nbsp;clicked through to my website, then it&rsquo;s reasonable to work on the principle that those 200 are&nbsp;more interested in my services than the 3,800 who did nothing.


&nbsp;


It&rsquo;s not difficult to collate the email addresses of your &lsquo;click through&rsquo; subscribers, as long as&nbsp;you&rsquo;re using a professional system to send your emails out. And although it&rsquo;s tempting to&nbsp;keep on bashing the 4,000 in the hope that a different 20% will open your email the next&nbsp;time around, the research indicates that this just doesn&rsquo;t happen &ndash; and you&rsquo;ll just irritate the&nbsp;individuals who&rsquo;re not interested in this particular service.


&nbsp;


Keep them OFF your follow up emails, and you stand a better chance of a) not having them&nbsp;unsubscribe and b) having them take notice of any future campaigns which might be of&nbsp;greater interest to them.


&nbsp;


A good way of engaging the interest of the &lsquo;non-active&rsquo; subscribers is to promote a discounted&nbsp;service or to ask them for their opinion via an online poll &ndash; and it&rsquo;s absolutely worth the&nbsp;effort, as it&rsquo;s much more cost effective to re-awaken an existing subscriber than to get new&nbsp;subscribers.

Lastly, if you&rsquo;ve had zero activity from a subscriber after 10-12 months, the advice is to let&nbsp;them go. To quote directly from the report, while this might seem like a nonsensical thing to&nbsp;do, given the negative effects on deliverability that emailing a massive number of inactive&nbsp;subscribers can have, you must at some point shed those addresses from your list.

				The question we're asking this week is whether it's better to deal with many suppliers or just a few, and I'd better declare a bias at this early stage of events - I favor dealing with a smaller number of suppliers where possible.



Why? Well, in the first instance, the more I deal with a single supplier, the more likely they are to offer me discounted prices and longer payment terms.



I build trust with that supplier, knowing that they are going to deliver great quality products and decoration, on time, and without making sloppy mistakes like including their contact details on the delivery note.



And the product data is likely to be more accurate. If you quote for a random selection of products from a database of half a million, what are the chances that all of the details will be valid?



I know from experience that there are some suppliers who never bother to provide updated product information, so you could be quoting for products which are priced incorrectly, aren't in stock - or worst of all, don't even exist any more!



This scenario is minimized when you quote from a product database made up only of suppliers you trust.



The only drawback to my mind is the possibility that your preferred suppliers won't have the product your client has requested. In this scenario you might have to cast the net a bit wider to get what you want.



But if you have a pool of say, 50 tried and trusted suppliers, nine times out of 10 they will be able to provide for your every need.

				There's a great deal of furore over Google's algorithm change which reportedly penalizes &quot;one in eight sites for poor content quality&quot;. Websites which fall foul of the new rules will drop down the search rankings - so what can you do to protect against this eventuality?



Well firstly it's important to stress that the new algorithm rewards sites which have:

    Original, non-copied content
    Research
    In-depth analysis
    Reports

And so, by definition, penalizes sites which do not. But many promotional products sites utilize a common database, and so won't score well against the 'non-copied content' factor.



There's no easy answer to this one; to minimize the issue it's worth taking a handful of your best selling products, perhaps the top 100, and customizing the product descriptions to something less generic, and more targeted towards your customers.



Better still would be to customize the full product range, and if you're serious about winning new business off the internet, then it's probably worth the time and effort.

Anything you like, as long as it's appropriate to your website and your target market. The obvious things are statistics and case studies about the effectiveness of promotional products as part of the marketing mix, reports on which are published all the time.

				Winning new business off the internet isn't easy, and search engine optimization can seem like a bit of a black art! However there are a number of ways in which you can make simple changes and additions to your website in order to improve your visbility on the web.

    Add new content to your website.

    Product data is important, but so are content-based pages. These are not only informative, they help to optimize your website for search engines. Engage with your customers with content such as customer testimonials, creating a blog with relevant and interesting information, or perhaps some statistics about the success of advertising specialties as a marketing tool.

    

    
    Customize product descriptions.

    If you're using product data from the same supplier as your neighbor, what are the chances that the product descriptions are the same? If you have the time, it's worth making the effort to change the 'standard' product descriptions to something more tailored to your clients - and drawing attention to your specialist services. The search engines prefer unique descriptions so you'll 'score' higher on the rankings, too.

    &nbsp;
    Don't delete old content...

    ...At least, not too quickly! You need to give the search engines time to index the content of your website.
